Can the Alarm on My BirdSnap Camera Trigger Automatically When a Squirrel or Animal Is Detected?

Quick Answer

Not currently. The BirdSnap camera's alarm must be triggered manually through the app while watching the live stream. There is no automatic "squirrel detection" mode that fires the alarm on its own. The camera can detect human contours and send intelligent activity alerts (with a subscription), but automatic alarm-on-animal-detection is not currently a supported feature.

What's Happening

The BirdSnap camera's AI can identify birds and detect general motion, but it does not currently have a dedicated "squirrel" or "animal type" category that can be linked to an automatic alarm trigger. Deterring squirrels with the alarm requires you to be watching the live stream when the intrusion happens and tapping the alarm manually.

What the Camera Can Do Automatically

While automatic squirrel-triggered alarms are not available, the camera does offer several features that help you respond quickly to unwanted visitors:

Motion detection and push notifications. The camera sends you a push notification whenever motion is detected. If you receive a notification and see an animal in the Library clip, you can open the live view to check if it is still there and trigger the alarm manually.

Human contour detection. The camera can detect human-shaped movement and send an alert specific to that trigger. This is primarily a security feature, not a squirrel deterrent.

Activity zone push (subscription). With a subscription, you can define a specific zone in the camera's view. If motion occurs within that zone, an alert is sent. This increases the chance you notice activity quickly.

Recommended Workflow for Squirrel Deterrence

Given the current manual-only alarm, the most effective approach is a combination of:

  1. Physical deterrence first — a baffle below the feeder and correct placement (10 ft from climbable structures) reduces squirrel access regardless of whether you are watching.
  2. Notification monitoring — keep BirdSnap notifications active so you are alerted quickly to any motion.
  3. Manual alarm use — when a squirrel appears in a notification, open the live stream and trigger the alarm to deter it in the moment.

Looking Ahead

Automatic deterrent triggers based on animal type is a commonly requested feature. BirdSnap continues to develop its AI detection capabilities, and this functionality may be added in a future update. Keeping your app updated ensures you receive any new features as they are released.
