What Temperature Range Can BirdSnap Handle?

Quick Answer

The BirdSnap camera is rated to operate between 14°F and 113°F (−10°C to 45°C). It functions normally within this range. Battery performance and solar charging efficiency decrease in cold weather, but the device itself is built for year-round outdoor use across most climates.

The solar panel operates normally at temperatures above 0°C (32°F). When the temperature drops below 0°C, the charging efficiency of the solar panel will decrease. Once the temperature rises, the solar panel will automatically resume normal charging. If you experience reduced performance in cold weather, we recommend bringing the feeder indoors and charging it with a power adapter to fully charge it. If it charges fully via USB, this indicates that the feeder camera battery is functioning properly.

Operating Environment Specifications

Parameter Range
Operating temperature 14°F to 113°F (−10°C to 45°C)
Storage temperature −20°C to 60°C (typical lithium battery guidance)
Operating humidity 10% to 80%
IP rating IP65

Performance at Temperature Extremes

Cold weather (below 32°F / 0°C):

The BirdSnap camera will continue to operate in freezing conditions, but you should expect:

  • Reduced battery capacity. Lithium batteries lose a portion of their charge capacity in cold. Expect shorter intervals between charges during winter.
  • Slower solar charging. The solar panel's charging efficiency decreases at temperatures below 0°C. Manual USB charging may be needed during extended cold or cloudy periods.
  • Potential condensation. Bringing a cold camera into a warm indoor environment for charging can cause condensation inside the housing. Allow the camera to warm up gradually before powering it on in a significantly warmer space.

Hot weather (above 95°F / 35°C):

In very hot conditions:

  • Battery may drain faster. High ambient temperature increases the self-discharge rate of lithium batteries.
  • Avoid direct midday sun on the camera body. While the camera is rated to 45°C (113°F), mounting it in full direct sun during hot summers — where surface temperatures can exceed the ambient air temperature — can stress the electronics. The feeder's built-in roof provides some protection.
  • Do not leave the camera in a closed vehicle. Internal car temperatures in summer can far exceed the 45°C operating limit.

When Temperature Affects Video Quality

In very cold conditions, the image sensor may show slightly reduced performance in low-light situations. In very high humidity (above 80%), condensation on the lens can temporarily blur footage until it dries.
