How Do I Mount My BirdSnap Feeder?

Quick Answer

BirdSnap feeders support multiple mounting options, including wall-mounted (using the included bracket and screws), pole-mounted (using the hose clip and bracket), and strap-mounted (wrapped around a tree or post). For best bird activity, mount the feeder 5–6.5 ft (1.5–2 m) off the ground in a location that faces open areas where birds frequent, with a clear line of sight away from direct sunlight on the lens.

Before You Start

When you unbox your BirdSnap smart feeder, it comes unassembled. Before you can start recording birds, you need to assemble the feeder body and mount it in your outdoor space. The good news is that the kit includes everything you need — no extra hardware required for most installations.

Why Placement Matters

"Feeders placed at 1.5–2 meters above ground in a semi-sheltered spot near natural cover — like shrubs or tree edges — see significantly more bird visits than those in exposed, high-traffic areas. Birds want to feel safe while feeding."

The height and position of your feeder affects both bird traffic and video quality. Too low, and ground predators like cats can deter birds. Too high, it may become difficult to add seeds to the feeder. Avoid mounting directly in front of strong sunlight, which can wash out the camera lens and reduce image clarity.

Step-by-Step: Assembling the Feeder

Before mounting, assemble the feeder body:

Step 1 — Attach the roof. Slot the roof piece onto the top of the feeder body, aligning the tabs with the grooves until it clicks into place.

Step 2 — Attach the feeder body to the base. Slide the feeder body onto the base/stand and lock it into position.

Step 3 — Insert a memory card (optional). The memory card slot is located on the top of the camera, behind a silicone cover. Insert a Class 10 or higher card (up to 128 GB) before mounting if you plan to use local storage. Note: a memory card is not required — the feeder works with free cloud storage out of the box.

Step 4 — Attach perch and accessories. Clip the perch bar into the slots on the base. You can also attach optional accessories like the fruit fork, hummingbird nectar cup, or water/jelly box to the perch at this stage.

Step-by-Step: Mounting Options

Option A — Wall-Mounted (Most Stable)

This is the most secure option, ideal for mounting on exterior walls, fences, or wooden posts.

What you need: 3× wall screws, 3× wall anchors (plastic plugs), 1× mounting bracket — all included.

  1. Use the included drilling template to mark the two screw hole positions on your wall. The recommended drill bit size is 11/64".
  2. Drill the holes and insert the wall anchors.
  3. Screw the mounting bracket to the wall, leaving a small gap so you can hook the feeder bracket over the screws.
  4. Hang the feeder's mounting bracket over the wall bracket and slide it down to lock it in place.
  5. Tighten the bracket screw to secure the feeder firmly — it should not shake or wobble.

Option B — Pole-Mounted

Ideal if you have a garden pole, shepherd's hook, or metal post already installed.

What you need: Hose clip, mounting bracket — both included.

  1. Slide the mounting bracket around the pole.
  2. Thread the hose clip through the bracket and around the pole.
  3. Tighten the hose clip securely so the bracket does not rotate or slip.
  4. Attach the feeder to the bracket and confirm it is stable.

Option C — Strap-Mounted

Perfect for wrapping around a tree trunk or thick wooden post without drilling.

What you need: Strap, mounting bracket — both included.

  1. Position the mounting bracket at your desired location on the tree or post.
  2. Thread the strap through the bracket and wrap it around the trunk.
  3. Pull the strap tight and secure the buckle.
  4. Attach the feeder body to the bracket and check for stability.

Recommended Placement Tips

  • Height: Mount at 5–6.5 ft (1.5–2 m) above ground. This keeps the feeder accessible to birds while reducing interference from ground-level animals.
  • Direction: Face the camera toward open areas where birds land and fly, such as garden clearings or low shrubs.
  • Sunlight: Avoid pointing the camera directly toward the sun, especially in the morning or late afternoon, as this causes lens glare and overexposed video.
  • WiFi signal: Keep the feeder within 30–50 feet (roughly 9–15 m) of your router for a reliable 2.4 GHz connection. Thick brick walls and large metal structures between the router and feeder can degrade signal quality.
  • Stability: Regardless of mounting method, the feeder must not shake in the wind. An unstable feeder triggers excessive false motion alerts and reduces video quality.

Before You Go Outside

Before placing the feeder outdoors, run through this quick checklist:

  • The charging port silicone cover is fully closed and sealed.
  • The camera antenna (if detachable on your model) is firmly tightened.
  • The feeder is charged — or the solar panel is connected and positioned to receive direct sunlight.
