My BirdSnap Camera Shows as "Offline" — How Do I Reconnect It?

Quick Answer

An "Offline" status usually means the camera has temporarily lost its WiFi connection. In most cases it will reconnect automatically within a few minutes without any action needed. If it stays offline, check the camera's power level, verify your router is working, and try restarting both the router and the camera. Only re-pair if the network credentials have actually changed.

What's Happening

The BirdSnap camera has a built-in auto-reconnect mechanism. When it loses its WiFi connection — due to a brief router outage, a power interruption, or a weak signal — the camera wakes itself up at increasing intervals to attempt reconnection. The retry schedule is:

15s → 30s → 60s → 2 min → 8 min → 16 min → 32 min → 32 min ...

This means the camera will keep trying on its own. If it is still showing offline after 30–60 minutes, something more persistent is preventing the connection.

Most Common Causes

1. Temporary router outage. Your internet service briefly dropped and the router restarted. The camera should reconnect automatically once the router is back online.

2. Camera battery is depleted. Once the battery drops below a critical threshold, the camera shuts down and stops connecting. Check the battery indicator in the app settings.

3. Camera is out of WiFi range. The signal at the camera's mounting location has degraded — perhaps a new obstacle between the router and feeder, or the router was moved. Effective range is typically 100–130 ft (30–40 meters) in open conditions; real-world distances are shorter with walls and obstructions in between.

4. WiFi network or password has changed. If your router was replaced or your ISP reset your router settings, the camera's stored credentials may no longer be valid.

5. Camera is powered off. Check that the camera has not been manually switched off or entered a deep sleep state.

Step-by-Step: Reconnecting an Offline Camera

Step 1 — Check the camera's physical status. Walk to where the feeder is mounted and look at the LED indicator. A solid blue light means it is recording (online). No light at all could mean it is powered off, out of battery, or in deep sleep. A flashing blue light means it is in pairing mode.

Step 2 — Check the battery level. Open the BirdSnap app, go to your device settings, and check the battery status. If it is critically low, charge the camera via USB-C and allow it to restart automatically.

Step 3 — Restart your router. Unplug the router from power, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Allow 2–3 minutes for the network to fully restore. The camera should reconnect automatically.

Step 4 — Restart the camera. Long-press the power button to turn the camera off, wait 10 seconds, then long-press again to turn it back on. The camera will attempt to reconnect to the last known WiFi network.

Step 5 — Pull to refresh in the app. On the BirdSnap app home page, pull down to refresh the device list. Sometimes the app's cached status is outdated even when the camera is back online.

Step 6 — Re-pair if credentials have changed. If the network name or password has changed since the camera was last set up, you will need to run through the pairing process again. Double-click the power button to enter pairing mode (blue LED flashes), then follow the Add Device steps in the app.

When to Contact Support

If the camera shows offline consistently despite being fully charged, within range, and connected to a working 2.4 GHz network — and a restart and re-pair do not resolve it — there may be a firmware or hardware issue. Contact support with:

  • Your camera's serial number (printed on the side of the camera)
  • Your router model and brand
  • A description of the LED behavior when you try to power on
  • Email: support@birdsnap.com
