Can I Use the Camera Without WiFi?
Quick Answer
Yes — with a memory card inserted, the BirdSnap camera will continue to record videos locally even without a WiFi connection. However, live streaming, cloud storage, push notifications, and AI bird identification all require an active internet connection. The camera must be set up with WiFi at least once before offline use is possible.
What's Happening
The BirdSnap camera has two independent storage channels: cloud storage (requires WiFi) and local memory card storage (works offline). When WiFi is unavailable, the camera can still detect motion, record video clips to an inserted memory card, and operate on a schedule. It just cannot upload those clips to the cloud or send alerts to your phone.

Important: First-Time Setup Requires WiFi
Before the camera can be used offline, it must be paired to the BirdSnap app at least once over WiFi. This initial pairing configures the device and enables it to operate independently afterward.
Once initial setup is complete, you can use the camera without WiFi by:
- Inserting a Class 10 memory card (up to 128 GB)
- Powering on the camera — you will hear a "ding-dong" sound
- Waiting for the startup chime sequence to stop
- The camera is now recording to the memory card without needing the app or internet
Using a Memory Card for Offline Recording
The camera automatically records motion-triggered clips to the inserted memory card when WiFi is unavailable. When the card is full, it overwrites the oldest recordings automatically, so continuous recording is maintained without manual management.
Recommended card specifications:
- Capacity: 8 GB minimum, 128 GB maximum
- Speed class: Class 10 or higher (U1, U3, or V10 also acceptable)
- Format: FAT32 (the BirdSnap app can format the card for you if needed)
Tip: Using a Mobile Hotspot
If you are in a location without home WiFi but want to access live streaming remotely, you can use your phone's mobile hotspot to create a 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Pair the camera to your hotspot and you will have full app functionality wherever you have mobile data coverage.
When to Contact Support
