Why Are My Recorded Videos Only 2 Seconds Long?
Quick Answer
Short clips are almost always caused by an unstable WiFi connection or insufficient upload bandwidth, not a camera fault. The BirdSnap camera records the full clip but will only retry uploading it to the cloud twice before abandoning the transfer — resulting in only the first second or two appearing in your library. Improving the WiFi signal or switching to SD resolution typically resolves it.
What's Happening
The BirdSnap camera captures the full video clip as soon as motion is detected and then immediately begins uploading it to cloud storage. If the WiFi connection is weak or unstable, the upload can stall or fail partway through. The camera has a failover retry mechanism — it will attempt the upload twice more, but if both retries fail, the incomplete clip is what gets stored. This is why you see a very short clip despite having set a longer recording duration.
This issue is more common when:
- The feeder is at the edge of your router's range
- The recording resolution is set to 2K (which produces larger files)
- Many devices are competing for bandwidth on the same network
- The router is running slowly or rebooting intermittently
Step-by-Step: Fixing Short Video Clips
Step 1 — Move the feeder closer to the router. Even moving it a few meters closer can meaningfully improve upload reliability. If permanent relocation isn't practical, consider adding a WiFi extender between the router and feeder.
Step 2 — Switch recording resolution to SD. Open the BirdSnap app and go to Camera Settings → Video Settings → Recording Resolution → SD. SD clips are significantly smaller files and upload much more successfully over weaker connections. You can return to 2K once your signal situation improves.
Step 3 — Restart the router. Unplug the router from power, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. A congested or overloaded router can cause upload failures even at close range.
Step 4 — Power cycle the camera. Double-press the power button to power down the camera, then press it again to power it back on. This can clear temporary upload errors.
Step 5 — Check the app for upload errors. Open the Library section of the BirdSnap app and look at recent clips. If most clips are very short or show a loading error, the issue is persistent and the steps above should be repeated systematically.
Why 2K Can Make This Worse
2K resolution produces high-quality, larger video files. On a weak WiFi connection, a 2K clip takes longer to upload and is more likely to time out than an SD clip. If you value connection reliability over video quality, SD is the more practical choice for feeders mounted at a distance from the router.
When to Contact Support
If you are within clear line of sight of the router, using SD resolution, and clips are still being cut short, there may be a camera firmware issue. Contact support and include:
- The recording duration you have set
- Your router model and approximate distance to the feeder
- A screenshot from the Library showing the clip lengths
