How Do I Format the Memory Card?

Quick Answer

Open the BirdSnap app, go to Camera Settings → Storage (or SD Card) → Format, and confirm. Formatting erases all data on the card and prepares it for use with the camera. Back up any clips you want to keep before formatting — the process cannot be undone.

When to Format Your Memory Card

  • First-time use: If you are inserting a new or previously used card, formatting it through the app ensures it is correctly structured for the BirdSnap camera.
  • Card not recognized: If the camera does not acknowledge the card after insertion, formatting often resolves compatibility issues.
  • Clearing all footage: Formatting is the quickest way to wipe all recorded clips at once when the card is full.
  • Firmware update via card: The card must be formatted as FAT32 before it can be used to load a firmware update onto the camera.
  • Performance degradation: Over time, heavily used cards can accumulate fragmented data. Periodic formatting restores full performance.

Step-by-Step: Formatting via the App

Step 1 — Download any clips you want to keep. In the BirdSnap app Library, select the clips and tap Save to download them to your phone gallery. Alternatively, use a card reader to copy files to your computer before formatting.

Step 2 — Open the BirdSnap app and tap the settings icon on your camera.

Step 3 — Go to Device Settings → find the Storage or SD Card section.

Step 4 — Tap Format and read the confirmation prompt carefully.

Step 5 — Tap Confirm to proceed. The formatting process takes a few seconds. Do not remove the card or power off the camera while it is in progress.

Step 6 — The camera will confirm when formatting is complete. The card is now ready for use.

Supported Format

BirdSnap memory cards should be formatted as FAT32. The in-app format function handles this automatically. If you format the card on a computer instead, make sure to choose FAT32 — not exFAT or NTFS, which may not be recognized by the camera.

Important Reminders

  • Formatting permanently erases all data on the card. There is no undo.
  • Always power off the camera before physically removing the memory card.
  • Use Class 10 or faster cards (up to 128 GB) for best performance.

When to Contact Support

If the app does not display a Format option, or if the card is still not recognized after formatting, the card may be damaged or incompatible. Contact support with the card's brand, model, and capacity.
