What Resolution Does BirdSnap Shoot In?
Quick Answer
BirdSnap records in 2K resolution when the WiFi signal is sufficient. SD (standard definition) is also available as a manual alternative. During live streaming, the app automatically switches between 2K and SD based on current network conditions to maintain a smooth stream. You can manually select your preferred recording resolution in Camera Settings → Video Settings → Recording Resolution.
The P55n camera supports up to 2.5K resolution.
What's Happening
The BirdSnap camera has a 2-megapixel sensor capable of 2K output. Both recording and live streaming resolution can be configured, though they behave slightly differently: recording resolution is set manually and stays fixed, while live stream resolution adjusts automatically based on your WiFi bandwidth.
Recording Resolution Options
| Setting | Quality | File size | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2K | High — sharp detail, clear species features | Larger | Ideal when WiFi is strong and storage is not a concern |
| SD | Standard — sufficient for general viewing | Smaller | Better for weak WiFi connections, limited cloud storage, or battery conservation |
To change the recording resolution:
Step 1 — Open the BirdSnap app and tap the settings icon on your camera.
Step 2 — Go to Camera Settings → Video Settings → Recording Resolution.
Step 3 — Select 2K or SD and confirm.
Live Stream Resolution
During a live stream, the BirdSnap app automatically selects and switches resolution based on current network quality:
- On a strong connection, the stream will play in 2K.
- If the network is slow or unstable, the app will drop to SD to maintain a smooth, uninterrupted view.
This switching happens automatically and does not affect your stored recording resolution setting.
Resolution and AI Identification
AI bird identification works on both 2K and SD recordings. While 2K clips contain more detail, SD clips often produce equally reliable identification results for clearly visible birds at the feeder. If you are using SD to improve upload reliability on a weak connection, it generally does not significantly impact identification accuracy.
Resolution and Battery Life
2K recordings consume more battery per clip than SD recordings — the camera stays active longer to record and upload the larger file. If battery life is a concern, switching to SD reduces both the per-clip recording time and upload overhead.
When to Contact Support
If 2K recordings appear noticeably blurry or lower quality than expected, the lens may have dust or water spots on it — clean it with a soft dry microfiber cloth. If quality issues persist, contact support.
